Food!

Current recommendations say weaning should begin at 6 months but last weekend we started Milo a few days early (gasp!) so Nick would be home to be included in all the fun. Milo in his new Tripp Trapp high chair -

Waiting for his first meal -

We are taking mostly a 'baby-led weaning' (BLW) approach which basically means that as babies are now older when they start eating solids, they are developmentally capable of eating actual food rather than purees or mush and so we started Milo with some chunks of banana. Milo having a close look -

Digging in -

Having his first taste -

Not much was going in so we switched to a more traditional approach (very anti-BLW but there you go) but with not much more success. Looking skeptical -

But giving it a go -

Not impressed -

In the end I don't think any banana actually was swallowed! Over the past week we have tried sweet potato, carrot, fruit yogurts, baby porridge (plain and banana flavour), apple, rice cakes, toast and squash, carrot, apple and prunes (sounds awful but actually not bad!) and he had tasted most of it, but seems to really dislike the tastes. He pulls hilarious faces, really grimacing when he gets the full flavour of something and then working to get it out of his mouth. He might have had a tiny amount of yogurt, rice cake and toast but whereas he was giving them a go earlier in the week, he now is pretty uninterested in trying anything, although he did give some toast a good lick today! I assumed he would be get right into this eating caper but he seems to be pretty ambivalent. As they say 'food is fun until they're one' and he does like sitting up at the table in his high chair so we will just keep giving things a go until we find something he likes!
